Emile Durkheim describes church as being one of the fundamental aspects of religion. Church he explains, is not limited to a specific building or ideology but refers to a community or group of people who have a set of collective values. Although the Church consists of worshipers it does not imply that there is a specific priesthood and it can appear in many different forms. Thus Durkheim defines Church as the common "beliefs and practices which unite into a single moral community called a church" (Giddens 1971:107).
